Educators’ and Trainers’ Symposium

Call for Papers - Due March 19, 2009

The Educators’ and Trainers’ Symposium provides a forum for academic and industry professionals who have a vested interest in technology education and training.   This one-day event is a unique opportunity for these individuals to come together and discuss their ideas for incorporating OO and various software development methods, practices and theory into courses, curricula, and training plans.

This year’s event will maximize audience participation and facilitate a great amount of sharing&emdash;each attendee will have an opportunity to contribute!  The program will be filled with invited talks, presentations, a panel, software demonstrations, interactive activities, posters, an open mike and networking time.

We solicit a variety of proposals in such areas as: teaching experiences that can work in a variety of environments, research papers, collaborative projects between academia and industry, active learning exercises, panel proposals, software demos, reports from other education/training events, and posters.


The selection committee is seeking ROCK-solid ideas.  Each submission will be evaluated (on a scale of 1 to 5) on the following qualities:

Relevance:  Does the submission describe a strategy that a variety of educators can use in many diverse environments?
Originality:  Does the submission contain an intriguing solution that the Symposium attendees have not heard before?
Clarity:  Does the submission clearly state the bottom-line idea?
Kinetic:  Does the submission present a technique that is so inspirational it sparks the energy and involvement of the audience?


Submissions are solicited in the following categories:

  1. Experience paper
    • Submissions in this category will describe a challenge encountered in an academic or industry environment and the innovative approach that was used to meet that challenge.
    • Proposals must include the following sections:
      • Abstract
      • Description of challenge
      • Description of how the challenge was met
      • Assessment/evaluation of success (how did you determine that what you did worked?)
      • Suggestions for how your technique can be used by other software educators in other types of environments
    • If your idea does not fit the ROCK-solid criteria or if you do not wish to write a paper, consider submitting it as a poster (see submission category #8).
  2. Research paper
    • Submissions in this category will report on a research project that contributes to knowledge in the field of software education and training.
    • Submissions must include the following sections:
      • Abstract
      • (appropriate sections)
      • Assessment/evaluation of approach (as appropriate)
      • Suggestions for how your findings are applicable to other software educators in other types of environments
  3. Active learning exercise
    • Submissions in this category will get the Symposium attendees on their feet with an interactive activity.
    • Submissions must include the following sections:
      • Description of an active learning exercise that has involved students in doing things and then in evaluating what they learned
      • An estimate of how much time you will need to demonstrate the exercise at the Symposium (include an estimate of the ideal amount of time and an estimate of an adequately shorter amount of time, just incase the time is limited)
  4. Panel
    • Submissions in this category should bring together un-like minds to explore a topic in teaching and learning software development.  The goal is to explore the topic from many different viewpoints in order to get people thinking, debating the many possibilities and even challenging their own beliefs.
    • Submissions must include the following sections:
      • A description of the topic and goal of the panel
        Format of the panel—innovative formats are encouraged!
      • List of panel members-- submit the following for each panelist:
        • Name
        • Affiliation
        • Description of his/her experience in the topic
        • Short (3-5 sentences) position statement
  5. Reports on Academic and Industry Collaborations
    • Submissions in this category will describe successful collaborative projects between academia and industry.  We have a lot we can learn from each other!
    • Submissions must include the following sections:
      • Abstract
      • Description of collaboration
      • Summary of what all parties gained from the effort
      • Suggestions for how others can form a similar collaboration
  6. Software Demo:  Tools & Techniques
    • Submissions in this category will describe software to support software development education and training.  Time will be allotted during the program for participants to open their laptops and informally demo their software tools and techniques.
    • Submissions must include the following sections:
      • Abstract
      • Description of software
      • Explanation of how the software is used in education/training
      • A description of other similar tools, and how this tool distinguishes itself
  7. Reports of other recent technology education/training events
    • If you are organizing and/or participating in any software education or training event, such as a workshop, working group, or conference during the year (or at OOPSLA’09), tell us about it. (Submissions in this category can include a description of an upcoming event if the event is being held after the Symposium’s March deadline.)
    • Submissions must include the following sections:
      • Description of the event
      • Expected outcomes
      • Audience (or intended audience)
      • Actual outcomes (if the event has already occurred)
      • Suggestions for what educators can do with the outcomes
  8. Mini "poster" (due at the conference)
    • All attendees are asked to bring a small poster (3 ft. x 3 ft. or smaller) to the Symposium, to be displayed on boards throughout the room. This is an additional opportunity to share the materials you use in your classrooms (exercises, effective evaluation questions and methods, course materials and handouts, a web page address (with the contents of that page), description of course needs, things youwant to brag about or advertise, anything!). Nothing fancy is needed. Proposals are not required. Feel free to grab some materials as you run out the door to OOPSLA and simply tack them up on the boards when you enter the Symposium.

Submissions should be made using the OOPSLA submission system.


OOPSLA usually features further events (workshops and tutorials) directed towards educators and trainers.  Look for other opportunities as the conference program unfolds, or propose an event of your own!

ACM SIGPLAN and OOPSLA will provide a number of scholarships for educators from two and four year colleges. Scholarships will cover conference expenses and contribute to travel expenses.
