Special Events
While OOPSLA 2003 provides professional-level interaction with the recognized leaders in object technology, there are also
opportunities every day for further interaction in a casual setting. The more social activities provided at OOPSLA 2003 are
a mixture of hosted events more focused on specific technologies, along with less structured receptions.
Because these events occur within the OOPSLA realm, OOPSLA name badges are required.

OOPSLA 2003 Welcome Reception
Monday, 27 October
17:30-19:30
|
|
All full (and Tuesday one-day) conference registrants, along with the Tutorial-only registrants, are invited to attend the
Welcome Reception. OOPSLA attendees are encouraged to view the OOPSLA 2003 Poster Session during the Welcome Reception.
The Poster Session at the Welcome Reception is an informal and highly interactive environment that gives OOPSLA attendees
the opportunity to engage with one another in discussions about relevant, ongoing work and critical issues in key areas. The
session also gives conference attendees the chance to learn about work in areas with which they want to become familiar and
about preliminary research results.
Newcomers Orientation
Monday, 27 October
19:30-20:00
|
|
A special session, immediately following the OOPSLA 2003 Welcome Reception, targeted at first-time OOPSLA attendees, to help
you maximize your OOPSLA experience. One thing that makes OOPSLA special is that everyone who participates can learn as long as everyone operates that way— OOPSLA is not a one-way (you listen, they speak) street. If you have never
been to an OOPSLA before, this is a unique opportunity to meet other first-time OOPSLA participants early in the conference
and begin what will become an outstanding way for you to stay on top of the trends in OO technology.
Java Community Process reception, hosted by Sun Microsystems
Tuesday, 28 October
17:30-19:30

|
The Java Community Process℠ (JCP℠) program is where the future of Java™ technology is defined. It is an open organization of Java developers who collaborate
to develop Java technology. The best minds in the industry and academic worlds come together to ensure compatibility and interoperability
of Java technology.
Come to the JCP meeting on Tuesday evening to find out about proposed Java specifications and language changes being developed
now through the JCP, including generics, concurrency utilities, autoboxing, metadata, new I/O APIs, management extensions
and more. This will be an opportunity to meet with and hear first hand from the JCP spec leads and experts involved with
these specification proposals. Food and drink will be provided.
eclipse Plug-in Reception, hosted by eclipse
Tuesday, 28 October
19:30-22:00
|
|
The eclipse community invites you to a special plug-in and coding reception on Tuesday October 28th.
We'd like to especially invite members of the contributing eclipse community - that is, plug-in writers and eclipse users
who have contributed to the eclipse project's success! We'd like you to meet each other and some members of the eclipse
development team, to interact and share ideas about your project and the exciting things in store for eclipse!
We'll give a brief overview of what's new in the eclipse project and then open the evening for an informal get-together.
Bring your laptop and get plugged-in! In cooperation with the IBM Eclipse Technology Network, we'll have a space set aside
where you can check out Code Rally - a programming road race - so bring your network adaptor too!

Ice Cream Social (OOPSLA 2004 Kick-off)
Thursday, 30 October
15:00-17:00
|
|
The Ice Cream Social serves as both the farewell event of OOPSLA 2003 and the kick-off event of OOPSLA 2004. It is also the
setting for the DesignFest
Wrap-up. Throughout the week, teams of software designers have taken part in the
DesignFest sessions. In addition, a small number of student teams (known as
CodeFest) have implemented some of these designs. The Ice Cream Social is
a chance for OOPSLA participants, whether or not they participated in
DesignFest, to see the designs produced during the earlier sessions, as well
as to view demos of the final software. Designers will
be available to discuss their experiences (both good and bad) of working in
their design team, and the CodeFest teams will describe the problems they
encountered while implementing the designs.
